100 Solutions to Diversity and Inclusion in Tech

Since the inaugural Tech Inclusion Conference in 2015 we have received and granted over 100+ scholarship applications to attendees. For each scholarship application we ask one simple question “What solutions would you like to see for diversity and inclusion in tech?” Below is a series leading up to the 2016 Tech Inclusion Conference of “100+ Solutions to Diversity and Inclusion in Tech”. The Theme for Tech Inclusion 2016 Conference is Inclusive and Sustainable Innovation and will be held October 26th — 27th at the Innovation Hangar in San Francisco. Tech Inclusion Conference is presented by Google for Entrepreneurs. The conference will feature a career fair, a startup showcase and a tech innovation demo hall. Regular admission tickets are now on sale.

Solution: Create A Belief System For Future Minorities In Tech

Firstly, inclusion to me means that minorities pursuing careers in tech are provided with adequate opportunities within the industry with regards to internships, conference attendance and full-time opportunities. This can be achieved through creating programs designated for minority recruitment in both disadvantaged and privileged communities and higher education institutions.

One problem which I believe is faced by minority groups is under-representation of minority groups in tech. This causes the youth in minority groups to nurture the mindset instilled in them that they are not “good enough” and “smart enough” to pursue a career in tech. Through conference or internship opportunities, minorities are able to curve this mindset as they are able to see and experience minorities already working within the tech industry, which will create some sort of belief system within them that could potentially be passed down from generation to generation. Anything is possible in this world!.
